The Department
-
Every department has some type of internal structure to it. In a police department this structure is often referred to as the "chain of command". A good "chain of command" should provide consistent avenues for communication when seeking help or relaying ideas. It should also provide defined job duties and responsibilities so personnel at each level know what is expected from them.

To give you a better understanding of how things work we have outlined the structure within the Willmar Police Department for you.
The Chief of Police is the head of the police organization and the Willmar Chief of Police is Dave Wyffels. He directly supervises the Captain and the Administrative Assistant. The Administrative Assistant directly supervises three civilian secretarial staff. The Captain directly supervises three types of sergeants; the Patrol Sergeants, Detective Sergeant, and the Juvenile Sergeant. Patrol Sergeants supervise patrol officers while the Detective Sergeant supervises the detectives, the Gang Enforcement Team, and the Drug Task Force member. The Juvenile Sergeant supervises the School Resource Officers, Community Policing / Crime Prevention Officer and the Community Service Officers.
